At Jirang (Chandragiri), deep in the hills of Gajapati district, stands the Padmasambhava Mahavihara — regarded as the largest Buddhist monastery in eastern India. Home to a Tibetan settlement and inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010, its golden Buddha statues and calm hill setting have earned the area the nickname "the Tibet of Odisha".
Getting there
Jirang is about 85 km from Berhampur and is usually combined with Taptapani on a day trip. Reach the region on our Bhubaneswar Airport to Berhampur taxi, or cover the south-Odisha highlights together on the Berhampur Grand Day Tour. See the Berhampur guide for the wider area.
